Herbalife Formula 1 Raspberry & White Chocolate is the free from version of the Formula 1 meal replacement shake, made with pea protein isolate at 45 % instead of soy protein. The 500 g canister provides 19 servings of 26 g, and the powder itself is free from soya, lactose and gluten. Prepared with 250 ml of semi-skimmed milk, one serving gives 215 kcal and 19 g of protein. High in protein, high in fibre, with 25 vitamins and minerals. Vegan sourced and coloured with beetroot red. Contains oat. Herbalife Independent Member.
Pea Protein Instead of Soy
Every other Formula 1 flavour is built on soy protein isolate. This one is not. It uses pea protein isolate at 45 % of the mix, with safflower oil in place of soy oil and sunflower lecithin in place of soy lecithin. The result is a Formula 1 that someone avoiding soya can actually use, which is why it exists as a separate product rather than just another flavour. If soya is not a problem for you, Strawberry Delight is the other fruit option on the standard formula, and the full line-up is in the Herbalife Shakes category.
🌱 Pea Protein Isolate at 45 %
The first ingredient, and nearly half the powder by weight. The formula also lists L-methionine, an amino acid that pea protein carries less of than soy does.
💪 19 g Protein Per Serving With Milk
A gram more than the standard Formula 1 flavours give. The powder is 39 g protein per 100 g, which is close to 45 % of its energy and makes it high in protein. With fortified soy beverage a serving gives 17 g.
🌾 High in Fibre
16 g of fibre per 100 g of powder, from inulin and gluten-free oat fibre, giving 4 g in a serving prepared with milk and 5 g with fortified soy beverage.
💊 25 Vitamins and Minerals
Thirteen vitamins and twelve minerals. Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system, and vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
🍓 Beetroot Red, No Artificial Colours
The pink comes from beetroot red. Sweetened with steviol glycosides, which the label notes are from a natural source. Contains oat.
What “Free From” Means on This Label, and What You Mix It With
The powder in the canister is free from soya, lactose and gluten. What you add decides which of those the finished drink keeps. Mixed with 250 ml of semi-skimmed milk, the shake stays soya free and gluten free, but the milk brings lactose with it. Mixed with 250 ml of fortified soy beverage, the shake stays lactose free and gluten free, but the soy beverage brings soya. So if soya is the thing you are avoiding, use milk; if lactose is the thing you are avoiding, use the soy beverage. The label sets it out the same way.

3 Ways to Prepare It
1. With semi-skimmed milk — the soya free route
Two scoops (26 g) with 250 ml of cold semi-skimmed milk at 1.5 % fat. 215 kcal, 19 g protein. Shake or blend.
2. With fortified soy beverage — the lactose free route
250 ml of fortified soy beverage gives 201 kcal and 17 g of protein, and brings the fibre up to 5 g.
3. Blended with ice or frozen raspberries
Pea protein gives a slightly different mouthfeel from soy, and a blender smooths it out more than a shaker does. Frozen raspberries thicken it further, adding their own calories and sugars on top of the figures below.
How It Compares With the Standard Formula 1
Changing the protein base changes the whole nutritional profile, so this is not simply a soya free version of the same powder. Per 100 g it carries more protein than the standard canisters (39 g against 35 g), fewer sugars (17 g against 23 g) and less carbohydrate overall (27 g against 33 g). Several micronutrients sit much higher: vitamin E at 32 mg, riboflavin at 2.0 mg, pantothenic acid at 12 mg, manganese at 4.4 mg and chromium at 90 µg are all well above the standard flavours. Calcium is lower, at 330 mg against 460 mg, and salt is higher, at 2.5 g per 100 g against 1.2 g, which works out at 1.0 g in a prepared serving. If you are replacing two meals a day with this shake, that is 2 g of salt from the shakes themselves, worth knowing when you plan the rest of the day’s food.
Where the Sugars Come From
The powder has 17 g of sugars per 100 g, from fructose rather than from fruit. Prepared with 250 ml of semi-skimmed milk a serving has 17 g of sugars, and 12 g of that is lactose from the milk itself. With fortified soy beverage it drops to 14 g, of which 9 g comes from the beverage. The label describes the product as a meal replacement shake mix for weight control and healthy nutrition with sugar (fructose) and sweetener (stevia).
