Herbalife Night Mode: The Real Saffron Research, Explained
By Dogus Dilan, Herbalife Independent Wellness Coach · Last updated 12 August 2026
Night Mode is built around 28mg of a specific saffron (Crocus sativus) stigma extract, the exact dose used in genuine published clinical research on sleep quality and evening melatonin levels. It’s worth being precise, though: that saffron research is real, peer-reviewed science, but it isn’t a formally authorised EU health claim. The only officially authorised claims on this product are for Vitamin B6 (normal psychological function) and Vitamin B6 plus Riboflavin (normal nervous system function). Not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
The Real Research Behind the Saffron Extract
Three genuine, peer-reviewed studies underpin this ingredient. A 2017 double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine found the extract improved mood in healthy adults over 4 weeks (Kell et al., 2017). A 2020 randomised, double-blind trial in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine studied its effect on sleep quality in adults with self-reported poor sleep (Lopresti et al., 2020). A follow-up 2021 multi-dose study in Sleep Medicine measured both sleep quality and evening saliva melatonin levels directly, finding a statistically significant 14.42% increase in reported mood after waking following 28 days of use (Lopresti et al., 2021).
These are real trials with objective measurements (saliva melatonin sampling), not just marketing claims — but it’s worth knowing the sleep-quality outcomes were based on participant questionnaires (a standard, valid method, though inherently more subjective than a lab measurement), and the initial improvement in sleep quality specifically was reported after 7 days, with mood and sleeplessness reduction assessed at 28 days.
What’s Actually an Authorised Claim vs. Ingredient Research
This distinction matters. Under UK/EU food law, only two claims on this product have gone through formal EFSA authorisation:
🧠 Vitamin B6
Contributes to normal psychological function.
⚡ Vitamin B6 & Riboflavin
Contribute to the maintenance of the normal function of the nervous system.
The saffron extract’s sleep and melatonin research, while genuinely published and peer-reviewed, is presented by Herbalife as scientific evidence about the ingredient itself, rather than as a formally authorised product health claim — a distinction worth understanding rather than treating the two as equivalent.

Who Shouldn’t Use It
